The above image is how I organized one of four 1 0' x 20' storage units my company uses for Christmas lights. The below image is how my predecessor did it....
I should add, I’m not done yet. The ceiling will get ropes crisscrossing from wall to wall, with garlands and wreaths hanging down via bungees. If needed, the center section can get a row boxes,, should be able to fit 90 no problem while still having plenty of room to pull out boxes as needed.
Okay, on to my predecessors work. This is one of the better looking storage units , and it’s even AFTER I went through and pulled about 25% of the crap out.
Nice, huh. Glad I wasn't one of the crew that had to find all the equipment for each install in this mess...
My best estimate after going through a ton of data from the last few years and a smidge of estimated guesstimation i s that the time spent reorganizing all 4 units (probably 20 man hours total) will save th e company roughly 350 man hours per Christmas lights season. That’s a metric shit ton of money, especially as those hours are all at a premium and can used gathering more new clients for Christmas light installs. Best part is the savings will scale as we grow and rent more units. If you want to make more dollars/hour, organize! Plan!
By next year we should have a new HQ with a huge space dedicated to Christmas lights and I ’m practically drooling thinking up ways to build a better storage solution.
I still can’t get over the fact that I’m getting paid to organize things and come up with systems to increase efficiency. I t sounds sooooo boring, but oh man do I love it. H ope it’s financially feasible to stay in this field for awhile.

The obvious problem with old system is wondering if you have all the lights for the Smiths house and then having to go back to the storage unit to look for that one missing box.

It is in the unit, that should be organized enough damn it!

Which—from what I've heard—happened a lot. I think he was prioritizing maximum storage space over any kind of usability... And even so he didn't do it very well

As long as the door is closed, you don't know if the cat is dead, or alive! Er... Wait. What

This is like my previous job where my first assignment was to take inventory of the storage room and I found an extra $25,000 worth of merchandise they didn’t know they had.

If you don’t open the unit you don’t know if the string of lights has a bulb out or not?

Man, that’s so satisfying.
I did a similar thing at a previous employer,
e
ven adjusted a bunch of shelves to custom heights
to make things fit better.
It was total
ly worth t
he
effort.

When it comes time for a comp review, DEFINITELY write down the man hours saved. That shit is worth its weight in gold. Unless management sucks ass, then it works well on a resume!

I am impressed and very satisfied

Nice!
I actually really like the sound of your job. I like mine, but yours is definitely one I could get down with.

It's a good gig. The above stuff, fixing all manor of gear, taking care of vehicles and pushing growth in the company. I like all of it (minus dealership negotiations for new work rigs).

Spend a few hours to save minutes every day moving forward. Those small things add u p to quite a bit. You know, there's a shelving unit in my office that I want to do something similar with, need to track down the actual shelving slats...

That’s the plan! I’m thinking after I’ve been here for 6 months I’ll try to get my salary adjusted. I don't want to wash windows again, but having that as a pretty lucrative fallback is at least a good way to not be afraid of asking for more

Oh man. I bet that felt great

Now if only I could figure out why this damn pressure washing wand keeps leaking....

Cool.
Did you replace that m iter saw yet?

Not yet! I should be able to find something next week. Gotta admit, after getting a bit more familiar with woodworking I really want to have my own shop

Actually, no. My supervisor got all pissed off that they had to explain to the auditors where the extra stuff came from, which I didn’t see as that difficult, since the last person had been fired for incompetence. I think he did end up hiding some of it.

It can be a pretty great hobby, that’s for sure. No way I could afford to redo my kitchen, if I couldn’t build the cabinets myself.
Please scrap that old saw ASAP!

Thank your lucky stars, because if you were I'd be bugging you about troubleshooting issues at least 10x as often as I already do!
